Mega Brain is new feature of annual Waynesboro Hospital Health Fair

Echo Pilot - 2/23/2017

WAYNESBORO - The 34th annual Waynesboro Hospital Health Fair, "Building a Healthier Community," will be held from 7: 30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, March 11, at Waynesboro Area Senior High School, 550 E. Second St. Free and open to the public, the health fair is presented by Waynesboro Hospital, an affiliate of Summit Health. This year's event will offer screenings and information for all ages on health and wellness from Waynesboro Hospital departments, Summit Health physician practices and community agencies.

"We're excited to host the health fair once again," said Waynesboro Hospital Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Melissa Dubrow.

"The creation of a healthy community is achieved through collaboration between the hospital and its providers; our Summit Health affiliates; community organizations; and the people who live here. This health fair really demonstrates that idea." New this year This year's health fair will feature the Mega Brain inflatable, a new attraction which will allow those in attendance to take a walk through the brain and learn how different medical conditions affect its function.

"The Mega Brain can show how a range of medical conditions, including stroke, concussion and addiction, affect it. We feel it's important to educate the public on these conditions that are hitting close to home for so many community members," said Dubrow.

Given increased concerns over addiction and overdose deaths, the Waynesboro Hospital Emergency Department and some of the community partners that form the Franklin County Overdose Task Force, will be on hand to discuss addiction in the local community.

Dr. Stephen Flack of Summit Primary Care will be available with information on concussion and Summit Health's new concussion management program.

A representative with the Waynesboro Hospital Stroke Team also will be present.

Waynesboro Hospital is a certified stroke center and in 2016 received the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.

Free screenings The hospital's lab team will again offer free screenings for cholesterol and blood sugar.

"An important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle is learning what your numbers are and understanding what they mean," said Dubrow. "We hope community members will take advantage of these and other important free screenings at the health fair." Adults 18 and older who plan to have their blood tested should not eat or drink 12 hours prior to their screening.

Additional free screenings and tests offered by Waynesboro Hospital and other community agencies at the health fair include: Simple lung function Bone density Blood pressure Diabetic foot Grip Vision Range of motion Balance Free Inbody screenings will be available to provide analysis of body composition as it relates to water, bone structure, fat and lean muscle mass, offering a clearer picture of what a person's weight actually means.

Family Favorites This year's health fair will once again feature apparatus from Waynesboro Volunteer Fire Department for children to learn about and, weather permitting, the Life Net81 Medical Helicopter will be on-site for fair-goers to view.

The Kids'Corner will offer a variety of fun activities and information on health geared toward the fair's youngest attendees.
