MPD, NAMI present mental health training

Moultrie Observer - 3/15/2017

March 14--MOULTRIE, Ga. -- NAMI Moultrie recently partnered with the Moultrie Police Department to offer "Introduction to Behavioral Health and Addictive Diseases," an eight-hour training for local citizens.

Instruction was provided by Lt. Daniel Lindsay, Moultrie Police Department K9/Crime Suppression Unit Supervisor. Lindsay also serves as the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Coordinator for MPD.

This course was specially designed for police officers, emergency responders, airport security, college police, hospital security, retail security, school resource officers, school social workers and counselors, community leaders, and advocates.

As a result of the training, participants achieved a better understanding of mental illness and developmental disabilities such as autism and addictive diseases. They learned to identify available community resources and to understand an historical overview of national and state mental health laws.

In an ongoing collaborative effort, Colquitt Regional Medical Center provided the training facility and NAMI Moultrie provided refreshments for class participants.

A variety of agencies from across southwest Georgia participated in the training. Law enforcement officers who successfully completed the course earned eight hours of P.O.S.T. credit.
