Education available for families with mentally-ill relatives

DIXON ? NAMI Sauk Area will have a Family-to-Family Education program at Town Square Centre, 102 S. Hennepin Ave.

The 12-week course will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. every Tuesday Sept. 5 to Nov. 21. It is designed for families of adults diagnosed with a serious mental disorder. The class is not for those diagnosed with the illness or family members of children living with a mental illness.

Information covered will include schizophrenia, mood disorders, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder, coping skills for handling a crisis or relapse, basic information about medications, listening and communication techniques, problem-solving skills, recovery and rehabilitation, and dealing with worry and stress as caregivers.

Tracy Brooks and Tara Wagenknecht, NAMI Sauk Valley volunteers, will teach the course.
